ROLLING

STEPHEN MEAD

Floors as meadows, tables as waves,
what prairie schooners, what ships, we?
All could be tumbleweed ghost streets
or play yard escape from adulthood, from jobs...

So what?
Rub off the statistics, the apathetic re-runs.
Brush, sooth days away so the precipice becomes
cloud banks & trampolines!
Come, bounce, balance-beam walker!
Come, mat-tumbler, hand-stander,
you of the rubber-headed, the rubber-necked stunts
invisible as any harlequin
through the business suit circus!

Come, out of the highest window where the birds flap
as though to say I'm crazy, but you're nuts,
I'm just a potential pillow but who is as free?
